Bookshelves

Jim was commissioned to design and build Craftsman style built-in furniture that turned the room into a comfortable, beautiful, and very functional library. Bookshelves, desk, file drawers, map drawers, and cabinets are all integrated into the design of this room. Careful design work turned wall space into convenient shelf space, and adjusted the proportions of the room to make it an inviting place to work or relax.

This library accomodates modern office equipment, and is integrated into a newer home. But the design work and craftsmanship are what you would expect to find in an elegant home from the early 1900’s.

The beautifully finished, highly figured maple in this bookcase makes it a focal point for the room. But what’s great is the way it fits into the room. To the left of the bookcase is a hallway that enters at an angle. By repeating the angle in the design of the bookcase, we've made the transition into the room a bit smoother. The display area on the right side of the bookcase is angled to face the main entrance of the room, and to make the best use of the space in the corner of the room.

Custom design can give you flexibility, if that is part of the design criteria you give us. This client wanted a large bookcase — for now. Later they might want a set of three bookcases. Or maybe a bookcase they can use as a room divider.

With this criteria in mind, we designed and built this open bookcase in three parts. In this photo, the three parts are connected to form a large bookcase. But they are designed and built as three separate bookcases that look good from all sides.

This bookcase is built in a modern style of solid cherry.
